"Combat" isn't the same here as on retail. Here if you fear a critter for example, or aggro one, (or a trigger NPC somehow), you never leave combat, leading into the situation what players refer to as a "combat bug", leaving the player no choice, but to force quit the game, die or Hearthstone. (Unless your class has an other way to escape combat, but then, as soon as you attack anything, it's back again usually), and there are more.
How should it work?
Doesn't matter if the NPC you engaged combat with is a critter, or a simple mob or whatsoever, if you go out of range of the mob (in most cases it's about 100 yards), the combat should automatically end, and not make you stuck in it permanently.
Most common causes of a combat bug:
- You accidently aggro a critter (example: with http://www.wowhead.com/spell=115180/dizzying-haze or simply fearing a nearby critter with Psychic Scream unintentionally. There are many possibilities.) Then you helplessly have to search what critter did you aggro, then kill it (in case you were able to find it).
- Damaging/Healing a world trigger NPC. Though it's not easy or maybe even possible to eliminate all the bugs that make this possible, fixing combat in general would more or less get rid of this. If they can follow you it can be problematic, but that's an other topic.
- Engaging a combat with a NPC which then engages a combat with an other NPC. It doesn't matter how far you go, as long one of them is alive, you are stuck in combat until one of them dies. Which could take a terribly long time.

Should just add if you dont cast abilities or anything for 10 seconds to kick you out of combat or idk how long is it on retail
I don't remember it like that against mobs, just in PvP. But I will test next time I log there.
I'm facing the same issue. And for me it's even worst, since I've made a rogue, and, because of that bug, I can't go stealth because I'm ALWAYS in combat. Fix that fgs!

I got the combat bug with my DK, everything was blocked except my hearthstone and my legion hearthstone. I used my hearthstone and arrived in Dalanar still combat bugged. I could't take a flight and nothing left for me than to force quit the game. For a moment I thought they somewhat fixed the bug by allowing you to use your Dalaran hearthstone.
Sometimes while not in combat but in combat bug you see your hp bar under constant attack. Is the mob that is attacking someone reaching me as well because its range is too big? Or is my aggro range to large due a bug?
Is it possible to make a script like /sleep that fully lets you go out of combat? If you are in pvp then you will be attacked quickly and back in combat. Same for mobs in pve. So, I don't see this as an exploit.
